SweetNSpicier has been receiving lots of custom clothing or accessory requests, which is very exciting! I figured I would introduce you all to the process and what goes into designing and constructing a custom piece.
The Steps:
Meet with the client and discuss what piece they want made
Determine what fabrics, accessories, and additional items will be used to create the custom design
Finalize the design of the item
Have a fitting!
Create a mock-up of the design
Have another fitting to alter the mock-up to the most accurate fit
Purchase fabrics, accessories, and any other additional items
Construct the piece using the most recent measurements
Have a last fitting with the finalized fabric
Add on additional touches and adjust any discrepancies with final piece
Give the piece to client and celebrate!
My favorite part of creating custom clothing pieces with clients is being able to work so closely with someone to make their dreams come true! It is such a joy to discover the creativity in the world that is outside of my own perspective. While the process for a custom piece can take time, it is exciting to connect with a client at each step to really make sure the piece is up to their expectations.
Another exciting part of this process is the opportunity to do fittings with clients. Instead of designing and creating products that can be scaled to a general size, the fittings allow the make the piece a completely unique fit. The client is able to see how clothes are fit to their own body and are welcomed to speak on how they want the fit to be! If you want a skin-tight fit, that can be arranged. If you'd prefer a looser fit, then the piece can be altered to allow that fit! I have always loved being able to communicate with clients and see how they want their clothes to flatter their own body. The custom pieces are a unique way to show off your own style and create a new image for yourself.
Lastly, the creation of the piece - the most anticipated part to me! In my mind, the mock-up is the first part of creating a piece. I prefer to drape my mock-ups to design a pattern, then alter the pattern through the fittings. Once the pattern has been completed and tailored to the client's preferences, I get to create the piece with the finalized fabrics. This part of the process is always a unique experience for me. I get to use my creative problem-solving skills when something doesn't go the way I anticipate, or I get to learn something new when my own skills aren't getting me where I want them to be. I love that I can spend the time to work on high-quality, detailed work, and know that at the end of this part I will be making someone happy!
